Green Tips for Living in Newfoundland and Labrador

Recycling containers as bathtub toys.  Kids love pouring water from one container to the other-make it more interesting by adding food colour and bubble for fun filled experiment!!  Containers big and small also make excellent toys for sand play.  Have kids decorate them for more added fun.

Recycle your old clothes.  There are also people in need of clothing.  Send your clothes to homes for the elderly, battered women or give them to second hand stores.

Recycle wedding decorations.  Sell your wedding decorations after the event- this could not only be a green tip but might put a few dollars in your pocket also!!!

Buy Local Groceries.  Carbon footprints can certainly be reduced by purchasing your groceries from local growers and producers.  Some local vendors appear on our shopping page.

Organize a swap among your friends. What can you swap? Books, toys, even clothes. It's a way for everyone to get something new without spending any money and without throwing a bunch of stuff away. Set aside some items for your swap when you're cleaning your room!

Use rechargeable batteries for your handheld computer games, MP3 players, cell phones, and digital cameras.

Choose reusable travel cups instead of disposable paper or plastic cups.

Take your own bags — preferably reusable ones — when you go to the grocery store.

Garbage Collection

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Household Garbage Collection

Regular household garbage is collected once a week from Tuesday to Friday with each street receiving collection on a specific day.  Items that can be collected include any item that can be contained in a garbage bag, not to exceed 50 lbs in weight.  Garbage bags should be placed by the curb not later than 8:00 a.m. on the morning of collection. Link to your regular garbage day schedule.

Collection Days and Statutory Holidays

For statutory holidays, alternate collection days are used.  These days are also listed in the Bulk Garbage Schedule Brochure.

Covering of Household Garbage

A by-law was adopted by the City in 2003 requiring residents to cover their garbage during the months of April 1 to November 30 each year by using a container, net, blanket or tarpaulin on th day of collection.  This container or covering must be removed from the curb no later than 8:00 p.m. on your scheduled day of collection.  Garbage not covered will not be collected.  If the garbage is torn open and City crews are required to return for cleanup, a fee will be charged to the owner of the property.  Please see Schedule of Rates and Fees. By working together, we can help keep our City clean!

Proper Disposal of Syringes & Sharp Items

Concern has been raised regarding the number of employees who have been injured as a result of needles, syringes, etc. that are disposed of improperly.   These items or bags that have been sprayed with bleach can cause serious personal injury. Please ensure proper disposal of syringes or sharp items to prevent injury to our sanitation workers.

Section 6 (b) and 6 (c) of our By-laws state:
-No person, firm or corporation shall dispose of syringes or any sharp object unless it is wrapped and secured to prevent injury to the sanitation worker.
- No person shall put any toxic substance such as javex or bleach on the outside of garbage bags, which can cause harm to persons and/or animals.

Proper Disposal of Animal Feces

Residents are advised that animal feces must be double bagged and distributed among various bags rather than placed all in one bag. This would ensure that crews responsible for the collection of our city refuse are not unduly exposed to unsanitary waste. Our garbage trucks are high compaction units, and a bag of animal feces literally explodes when compressed with the end result causing possible injury and creating unsanitary conditions that pose a health problem to employees and the public.

 Fiber Reycling Program

In October 2005 the City implemented a mandatory fiber recycling program for all Mount Pearl Households.  Paper and cardboard products must be separated from regular garbage and placed in CLEAR BAGS for collection on your regularly scheduled garbage collection day.  The CLEAR BAGS must be placed at the curb next to your regular garbage bags. See link below.

Bulk Garbage Program

A special collection of bulk garbage takes place during the months of May, August and October.  To ensure maximum efficiency, the City is divided into five zones and each zone is scheduled for collection on a specified day during the months bulk garbage is collected.  A pamphlet containing the bulk garbage collection schedule is delivered to all residents in January of each year.  To find your specific collection days check out the link to our Bulk Garbage Schedule.

Waste Diversion

Definition of Waste Diversion

Waste diversion is the process of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste material ('garbage') rather than sending it to a landfill. Composting food and yard waste is a form of recycling.

Using the '3 Rs' diverts waste materials from the garbage bin and therefore from being sent to a landfill.

The City of St. John's Waste Diversion Program primarily refers to the curbside collection program that will begin in 2010 for recyclable containers and fibres, and in 2011 for organic compostables.

Ever Green Recycling

Ever Green Recycling is a leading recycling and environmental business. We currently have three depots in St. John's, one in Torbay and over the years we've seen thousands of products transformed over and over, saving energy, reducing waste, and leading this province to a greener future.

Tips for Recycling Effectively

Please remove caps, straws and liquids from all beverage containers. Beverage containers that still have on the caps and straws and that are dirty, filled with liquids and contaminants pose additional health risk to our employees and significantly increase the handling time required for counting and sorting. Ever Green Recycling reserves the right to decline any and all material that is not presented in an appropriate manner.
